Engineering capacity planning is about matching what you want to build with what your team can actually deliver. This tool helps you visualize that balance before you commit to a roadmap.
Set your timeline, team size, and buffer percentage. Then add work packages with estimated engineering effort. The tool calculates utilization in real-time so you can see whether you’re over-committed or have room to add more.
Key Concepts
- Engineer-weeks: One engineer working for one week. A 4-person project for 3 weeks = 12 engineer-weeks.
- Buffer: Time reserved for bugs, meetings, and unplanned work. 20% is a reasonable starting point.
- Utilization: Allocated capacity divided by available capacity. Over 100% means you’re overcommitted.
Tips
- Always include buffer. Teams without buffer slip on deadlines.
- Drag project bars to adjust timing and see conflicts.
- If utilization is consistently above 80%, you’re likely overcommitted.
